Matthew is Deputy Dean in the College of Arts, Humanities and Education at the University of Derby which he joined in 2023. He supports the PvC Dean in overseeing all aspects of the College’s teaching, research, knowledge exchange and income generation.
Matthew previously worked at Anglia Ruskin University as Deputy Dean for research having worked at Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln and at Newman University, Birmingham where he was Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts, Society and Professional Studies. His background is in English Literature and his research focuses on Early Modern travel literature and the history of the book. Matthew serves on the editorial board of Publishing History and is a steering group member of the Centre for Print History and Culture.
Matthew has held research fellowships at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich and the Folger Shakespeare Library Washington and is a reviewer for AHRC having also acted as a peer-reviewer for the Canadian and Swiss Research Councils.
In addition to teaching and research interests Matthew is committed to enhancing the student experience in all their elements. He has particular interests in developing enterprise and employability and has established a number of partnerships between arts organisations and the universities he has worked for including those with The Arkwright Society, the Wordsworth Trust, The Birmingham Repertory Theatre, and the British Library.
